Three U.S. Army soldiers stationed at Fort Cavazos in Texas face federal charges related to human smuggling involving individuals from Mexico and Guatemala. Emilio Mendoza Lopez, Angel Palma, and Enrique Jauregui are accused of transporting undocumented individuals, with Palma and Jauregui also charged with assaulting a federal agent. The soldiers, assigned to the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, were allegedly involved in a smuggling operation that resulted in a Border Patrol agent being injured when their vehicle collided with a Border Patrol vehicle in Presidio, Texas. Mendoza Lopez was apprehended at the scene, while Palma fled on foot and was later found in a hotel in Odessa. Jauregui is believed to be the recruiter and facilitator of the conspiracy. Palma and Jauregui are scheduled for hearings on December 6 in Waco, Texas. Fort Cavazos, where the soldiers are stationed, had over 59,000 direct employees in 2023, with a significant number of active-duty military personnel. The U.S. Army post covers 340 square miles and supports multiple units and a corps headquarters. The spokesperson for Fort Cavazos stated that the post will continue to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in this matter.
