Boston Mayor Michelle Wu introduces free museum access for all city children in response to criticism

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu fulfilled her promise of expanding free access to cultural institutions for all city schoolchildren with the launch of Boston Family Days. The initiative will provide free access to museums and zoos on the first two Sundays of each month, aiming to include all children and families in the city.

Wu faced backlash over her previous program, BPS Sundays, which had eligibility limits that excluded low-income and minority families. The criticism from Councilors Erin Murphy and Ed Flynn led to the rebranding of the initiative to Boston Family Days.

Despite mixed emotions from Murphy, who criticized the lack of communication, and praise from Flynn, the expansion is seen as a win for every Boston family. The program will now include nine participating institutions with the support of the Barr Foundation and Amazon.

Wu emphasized the goal of maximizing access for everyone in the city, highlighting the success of the program in providing opportunities for thousands of students and families to visit museums and zoos for the first time.
