Press Release: Embracing Pollinator-Friendly Gardening
Sharon, MA — April 26, 2025
As spring awakens life in gardens across the region, experts are urging gardeners to consider their role in supporting pollinators. Ulrich Lorimer, director of horticulture at the Native Plant Trust, emphasizes the importance of nurturing these vital creatures whose populations are under threat from habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change.
At Ward’s Berry Farm, vibrant blooms are not just a visual delight; they also serve as critical food sources for bumblebees, solitary bees, and other pollinators emerging from winter dormancy. Lorimer encourages gardeners to create habitats that coexist harmoniously with the aesthetic beauty of formal gardens. For example, maintaining patches of bare earth, using careful mulching techniques, and leaving leaf litter can provide essential nesting opportunities for pollinators.
A recent inquiry from local gardener Ann Dorfman highlights the challenges faced in striking this balance. Lorimer advises that when caring for formal spaces, it’s possible to maintain landscape design while fostering essential habitats for bees and butterflies.
As we embrace gardening this season, Lorimer hopes to inspire gardeners to make mindful choices that contribute to the well-being of pollinators for generations to come.
