Massachusetts immigration lawyer and US-born American citizen, Nicole Micheroni, received an email from Trump administration immigration authorities instructing her to leave the country. The email stated, “It is time for you to leave the United States.” Micheroni was shocked to receive such a message, as she is a US citizen.
The incident has raised concerns about the aggressive efforts by the Trump administration to remove non-citizens from the United States, including those who are here legally. Trump has also hinted at removing US citizens who commit unspecified crimes and sending them to prison in El Salvador, which experts say is clearly illegal.
An official from the US Department of Homeland Security suggested that Micheroni may have received the notice because her name was listed on paperwork for clients. US Customs and Border Protection authorities reportedly used contact information provided by the alien, which may have resulted in notifications being sent to unintended recipients.
Despite assurances from DHS that issues will be addressed on a case-by-case basis, Micheroni believes the email was a scare tactic to instill fear of immigration. She expressed concern that such actions could be used to intimidate people and undermine the rights of US citizens.
