A 38-year-old Texas man, Marshall Garrett, was arrested after his dogs attacked his neighbor, Harriette Phillips, resulting in her death. Garrett was charged with three counts of criminal failure to secure his dogs after they broke through the shared fence and mauled Phillips in her backyard. Witnesses described the dogs as aggressive and noted previous instances of them trespassing into other yards. Phillips was seen on surveillance footage trying to defend herself with a hammer before being attacked by the dogs.
Garrett had been warned by a neighbor about his dogs’ behavior before the attack, but failed to take action. He was also connected to a separate murder case, where he was allegedly involved in the assault of a 69-year-old man during a money dispute outside a Family Dollar in Houston. Garrett was out on bond for this case when the dog attack occurred.
The three dogs involved in the attack were euthanized, and Garrett was taken into custody by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. The incident highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and securing animals to prevent harm to others. Phillips’ tragic death serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of negligence in handling dangerous animals.
