Massachusetts Democrats Seek to Strengthen Transgender Rights

Massachusetts Senate Democrats have introduced a comprehensive bill to protect reproductive and transgender health care from potential attacks by entities in other states. Sen. Cindy Friedman and Attorney General Andrea Campbell filed the proposal, targeting laws on medical record sharing and cooperation with federal investigations. They argue that the bill is necessary to safeguard residents in light of the Trump administration’s policies.

The legislation prohibits state agencies from sharing data with the federal government or out-of-state entities regarding protected health care activities. It also mandates restrictions on access to electronic medical records and prohibits insurance discrimination against organizations offering reproductive and transgender care. Additionally, the bill limits local health boards’ ability to discipline health professionals based on actions taken in other states.

Senate President Karen Spilka emphasized that the bill aims to protect residents’ right to make health care decisions and defends Massachusetts values. The proposal builds upon previous legislation safeguarding reproductive and gender-affirming care. Democrats seek to establish Massachusetts as a beacon for reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights by ensuring safe access to essential health services.
