State Representative Christopher Flanagan from Massachusetts facing allegations of misusing $36,000 for personal expenses, including payments for “psychic services”

Massachusetts State Representative Christopher Flanagan, 37, was arrested and charged with stealing tens of thousands of dollars for personal and political expenses, including utilizing psychic services. He pleaded not guilty to five counts of wire fraud and one count of falsification of records and was released on bail. Flanagan, who also served as the executive officer of a Home Builders Association, was found to be facing financial difficulties despite his high salaries from both jobs.

The indictment alleges that Flanagan stole a total of $36,000 from the HBA through wire transfers, including using funds for his state representative campaign and paying for personal psychic services. He is also accused of creating fake personas to mislead investigators, including making up a person to send out campaign mailers.

Following his arrest, Gov. Maura Healey and House Minority Leader Brad Jones have called for Flanagan’s resignation, citing a betrayal of trust and his oath of office. Flanagan’s defense attorney stated that he is looking forward to recovering from recent health issues and getting back to his family. Flanagan is due back in court for a status hearing in May.

The Home Builders Association of Cape Cod expressed gratitude for the investigation into Flanagan. The Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance has also investigated Flanagan’s campaign, uncovering potential fraudulent activities. Flanagan, a Democrat, was elected in 2022 and represents the towns of Dennis, Yarmouth, and Brewster on Cape Cod. He has not yet commented on the charges.
