Healey hands over reelection messaging duties to MassDems.

Massachusetts Democrats are gearing up to counter Republican candidates for governor by tying them to President Donald Trump’s policies. Governor Maura Healey, seeking reelection, has so far focused on her record in office rather than directly attacking her opponents. The Massachusetts Democratic Party wasted no time in linking candidate Mike Kennealy to Trump and urged supporters to reject his agenda. Political strategist Rob Gray believes Democrats will try to paint candidates from the Baker administration, like Kennealy, as “Trump robots” but doubts it will be effective. Democrats would rather attack than defend Healey’s record on spending and taxes.

In a separate matter, House Speaker Ron Mariano believes Milton should not be subject to a transit-oriented housing law because it only has a trolley, not a full transit system. Mariano expressed sympathy for Milton’s situation but is not planning to introduce legislation to exempt it from the law. Despite Mariano’s views, Healey and Attorney General Andrea Campbell are pursuing non-compliant cities and towns aggressively. Mariano emphasized the importance of cities and towns complying with the law to meet housing targets. MassDems are reiterating the importance of adhering to the law, even as some officials, like Mariano, question its application to certain communities. The debate over Republican candidates’ ties to Trump and the controversy surrounding the transit-oriented housing law are shaping up to be significant issues in the upcoming election.
