For the second time in a few months, a Democratic politician in Massachusetts has been arrested for corruption. Newly appointed U.S. Attorney Leah Foley is cracking down on public corruption, with Democratic state Rep. Chris Flanagan being the latest target. Flanagan, accused of stealing over $36,000 from his trade association, used the funds for his campaign, personal expenses, and even “personal psychic services.” He also created a fake group to support himself in his reelection bid. Despite calls for his resignation, Flanagan is holding onto his $100,000 salary. This arrest, along with the recent plea deal of City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson, who stole $7,000 from taxpayers, shows a lack of accountability and trust in the government. House Speaker Ron Mariano did not demand Flanagan’s resignation, raising concerns about lawmakers sticking together despite corruption. The arrests beg the question of whether Massachusetts politics attract the wrong people or if the system is inherently corrupt. Both Flanagan and Anderson show little remorse, with Anderson even smiling for cameras after her plea deal. While Flanagan’s lawyer claims he is recovering from heart surgery, he may be facing a lot of rest in prison. These recent incidents further tarnish the reputation of Massachusetts politics and highlight the need for accountability and integrity in government.
