Can Luisa Gonzalez become Ecuador’s president despite Correa’s influence? | Updates on Elections

Ecuador’s upcoming presidential election is shaping up to be a battle between a candidate with ties to the previous administration and a president who has faced criticism for human rights abuses and executive overreach. While President Noboa has faced backlash for his short term in office, political consultant Jacobo Garcia believes growing voter dissatisfaction may tip the scales towards the opposition candidate, Gonzalez, not necessarily out of support for her but rather due to frustration with the current government. Indigenous leaders, who have clashed with previous administrations, are also throwing their support behind Gonzalez, viewing her as the lesser of two evils when it comes to defending their rights and territories.

In a strategic move, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) has endorsed Gonzalez with a 25-point platform aimed at repealing anti-Indigenous policies implemented under the Noboa administration. This decision followed extensive internal consultation within Indigenous communities, with a focus on resistance and demands for action on Indigenous rights and environmental justice.

Despite potential challenges posed by Ecuador’s fiscal crisis and divided legislature, alliances and coalitions will be crucial for any government Gonzalez might form if elected. While campaigns are built on hope, Avila, a professor at the University of Cuenca, emphasizes that governance requires collaboration and unity. The outcome of the election will not only determine Ecuador’s political direction but also set the stage for addressing pressing issues facing the country.
