State Rep. Christopher Flanagan, D-1st Barnstable, pleaded not guilty to six fraud charges in a federal court appearance following his indictment on Friday. The 37-year-old from Dennis is facing five counts of wire fraud and one count of falsification of records. Flanagan, who has no prior criminal record, was released on conditions including regular probation check-ins and employment requirements.
Flanagan’s lawyer stated that he recently underwent heart surgery and is looking forward to reuniting with his family. However, there was no indication of whether he would resign from his position. Governor Maura Healey called for his resignation, citing concerns about the impact of the charges on his ability to serve his constituents. House Speaker Ronald Mariano expressed alarm at the charges, stating that they undermine public trust in the legislature.
The indictment alleges that Flanagan misused funds from the Home Builders Association on Cape Cod, withdrawing $36,000 and creating false expense reports to cover his actions. The funds were used for personal expenses such as psychic services, menswear, an air conditioner, and an electric dryer. Additionally, $10,000 was used in his election campaign, including for mailers and t-shirts.
Flanagan’s case brings attention to issues of fraud and misuse of funds by public officials, as well as the impact of such allegations on public trust in government institutions. The ongoing legal proceedings will determine the outcome of the charges and their implications for Flanagan’s political career.
