Massachusetts man who once sentenced to life without parole for killing a 15-year-old girl to be released after 44 years in prison. Roger Francis shot and killed Marialice Pike in 1967 when he was 20. He fled to Canada but was eventually arrested and convicted of first-degree murder twice. Due to a Supreme Judicial Court decision, Francis became eligible for parole after serving 15 years. The parole board unanimously decided to release Francis after determining he had shown positive adjustment and low risk of re-offending. However, Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz expressed outrage, stating that Francis’ release is not a benefit to the community, considering his callousness during and after the murder. Cruz urged the Parole Board to consider their obligations to victims like Marialice and their families before releasing individuals like Francis. Francis is set to be released in two weeks, at age 78, after serving 44 years in prison.
