Families Involved in Fatal New York Helicopter Crash: What We Know

Agustín Escobar, a Siemens executive, was joined by his wife and their three young children for a sightseeing helicopter tour of New York City that tragically ended in a crash into the Hudson River, killing all five passengers and the pilot. The family, visiting from Spain to celebrate the wife’s birthday, was on vacation when the accident occurred.

Escobar, 49, was the CEO of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility, and his wife, Mercè Camprubí Montal, was an executive at Siemens Energy. They had three children under the age of 11. Escobar was born in Spain and had previously worked for Siemens in various countries including the United States and Brazil. The family’s remains were expected to be returned to Spain once a New York judge granted permission.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration, with authorities believing that the helicopter fell into the water inverted. The weather conditions at the time of the crash were cloudy with moderate winds.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called the incident “an unimaginable tragedy,” expressing condolences to the victims’ loved ones. The family’s tragic end has left Siemens and the community mourning their loss, as they were described as beloved colleagues and friends. The details of the crash are still being investigated, and efforts are underway to return the family’s remains to Spain.
