The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has recommended bridge risk assessments following an investigation into a fiery crash in June 2023 involving a truck on the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The crash, which resulted in the driver’s death and the collapse of an overpass on I-95 in Philadelphia, was attributed to the trucker’s mistakes and fatigue.
The NTSB’s report found that the driver, Nathan Moody, was speeding and failed to secure the manhole cover of his gasoline tanker, leading to a fire that caused the overpass to collapse. The investigation revealed structural issues with the interstate’s southbound lanes as well. Moody was employed by TK Transport, affiliated with Penn Tank Lines, and was delivering gasoline at the time of the crash.
The report highlighted the importance of fatigue management programs for drivers and the use of electronic stability control (ESC) systems in vehicles to prevent rollovers. The NTSB also identified four Delaware River bridges that may be vulnerable to collisions and recommended assessments to improve safety.
The crash caused significant damage and required months of emergency repairs, impacting traffic and the surrounding area. First responders faced challenges due to the intensity of the fire and had to avoid parking near manholes and under the overpass for safety reasons. The investigation emphasized the need for preventive measures and safety protocols to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.
