Republican ends hearing after argument about misgendering Sarah McBride

A House hearing abruptly ended after a Republican committee member, Rep. Keith Self, misgendered Rep. Sarah McBride, the first openly trans member of Congress. Self referred to McBride as “Mr. McBride,” and despite objections from Democratic committee members, he continued to use the incorrect pronoun. The hearing was supposed to discuss the State Department and policies on arms control, international security, and U.S. assistance to Europe.

In response to the incident, committee members expressed disappointment in Self’s actions and the lack of decency shown. Rep. Bill Keating, one of the top Democrats on the subcommittee, called out Self for his behavior and demanded that McBride be addressed correctly. Self then adjourned the hearing, causing chaos in the room.

This incident is not the first time Republican lawmakers have targeted McBride. Rep. Nancy Mace introduced a resolution banning transgender women from using female bathrooms in the Capitol, specifically aimed at McBride. The issue of misgendering and discrimination against transgender individuals has been a growing concern in Congress.

McBride, who made history as the first transgender person elected to Congress, has faced challenges and attacks from some Republican lawmakers. Despite these obstacles, she remains focused on her work and advocacy, highlighting the importance of standing up for transgender rights and representation in government.
