Brooklyn resident receives sentence for a scheme reminiscent of Seinfeld

Thomas John Sfraga, also known as TJ Stone, was sentenced to 45 months in prison and ordered to forfeit $1.3 million for defrauding investors of over $2 million in a Ponzi scheme involving companies like Vandelay Contracting Corporation. Sfraga used references to ‘Seinfeld’ to lure victims into investing in fake ventures. He convinced people to invest in real estate and cryptocurrency projects, but instead used the money for personal expenses. Sfraga’s scam was uncovered when investors caught on, and he fled to Arizona and then to Nevada where he was finally caught. Victims included friends, neighbors, and parents of children who played on sports teams with his children. Sfraga made false promises to victims struggling financially, and convinced some to invest in bogus ventures for real estate and cryptocurrency. He ran successful podcast and had sponsorships but chose to cheat and swindle those around him to fund his lifestyle. Sfraga plead guilty to wire fraud and will have to pay restitution to victims at a later date. His scams unraveled in a more ignominious way than George Costanza’s fictional company on ‘Seinfeld,’ leading to his arrest at a Las Vegas casino. Sfraga had a decent life with a supportive wife and successful business ventures, but chose to betray the trust of those around him for personal gain.
