Meta Attempts to Halt Additional Sales of Former Employee’s Critical Memoir

Meta has won a legal victory against a former employee, Sarah Wynn-Williams, who published a tell-all memoir titled “Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism.” The book contained explosive allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior by senior executives at the company. Meta pursued arbitration and an arbitrator temporarily prohibited Wynn-Williams from promoting or distributing copies of the book. The two parties will now begin private arbitration.

In addition to halting promotions and sales, Wynn-Williams must refrain from making disparaging comments and retract any previous detrimental comments. Meta has denied the allegations in the book, calling them false and out-of-date. The company spokesman stated that Wynn-Williams was fired for poor performance and had made misleading and unfounded harassment allegations.

It is unclear if Meta’s attempts to retract the book will be successful, as in 2023, the National Labor Relations Board ruled against companies preventing workers from discussing harassment or discrimination. Meta previously stated in a shareholder report that it does not require employees to stay silent about such issues and strictly prohibits retaliation.

This legal battle is one of Meta’s strongest responses to a former employee’s tell-all memoir, with company executives dismissing most claims as exaggerated or false. The publisher of the book did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and Wynn-Williams’ spokesperson also did not comment. The court ruling puts a temporary stop to the distribution and promotion of the book, pending further arbitration.
