Former New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has reportedly signed a two-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers for $7 million, with $5 million guaranteed. Jones, who was drafted in 2021, spent the 2024 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being traded by the Patriots. Despite being initially intended as a backup, Jones was thrust into the starting role due to an injury to Trevor Lawrence.
Jones’s decision to join the 49ers reunites him with head coach Kyle Shanahan, who spoke highly of him in the past. Shanahan admitted that he was conflicted between Jones and Trey Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft, ultimately choosing Lance. With the 49ers, Jones is expected to serve as a backup to Brock Purdy.
Jones’s performance with the Jaguars in 2024 included completion of 65.3% of his passes, 1,672 yards, eight touchdowns, and eight interceptions. The Jaguars went 2-5 in his seven starts. This signing presents an opportunity for Jones to develop under Shanahan’s guidance.
This move comes after Jones spent three seasons with the Patriots before joining the Jaguars. In joining the 49ers, Jones looks forward to a fresh start and the chance to contribute to the team’s success as they push for a playoff spot in the upcoming NFL season.
