The Trump administration has targeted six Massachusetts colleges and universities, along with dozens nationwide, over allegations of ongoing antisemitism on campuses. Boston University, Emerson College, Harvard University, Tufts University, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Wellesley College are among the 60 schools warned of “potential enforcement actions” by the Department of Education.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon sent letters to the schools on Monday, notifying them of possible investigations for Title VI violations related to antisemitic discrimination and harassment. Other New England schools, including Brown University, Middlebury College, and Yale University also received similar letters.
As the Department of Education expands its investigations, students and professors share their concerns about potential withholding of federal funds as a solution to combat antisemitism on campuses. Harvard student Charles Covit expressed the need for change following controversial speakers on campus, while professor Ryan Enos criticized the administration’s actions as anti-democratic.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon emphasized the need for university leaders to do better in protecting Jewish students from ongoing antisemitic incidents that disrupt campus life. The Trump administration has already added 55 schools to a list of five being investigated since last month, and Harvard University did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.
