Harvard University is facing a new lawsuit from Robert Harrington, a retired Boston cop, who claims he was discriminated against due to his age while working for the university’s police force. Harrington, 70, alleges that he was passed over for a promotion to captain because of his age, despite his qualifications and successful track record. His lawyer, Sarah Burger, stated that they are seeking damages from Harvard for the alleged discrimination. The lawsuit also claims that Harrington faced negative treatment from the new police chief, Victor Clay, including being stripped of his supervisory responsibilities without explanation.
Harrington had a long career with the Boston Police Department before joining Harvard’s police force in 2013. Despite receiving praise for his work performance, he was placed on administrative leave in 2021 while the department investigated his alleged involvement in a sick leave request. Upon returning to work, Harrington was not promoted to a captain position and believes he was retaliated against for speaking out against age discrimination within the department. Harvard has declined to comment on the pending litigation.
