2022 ‘Blood Moon’: The Most Recent Total Lunar Eclipse

A rare total lunar eclipse, also known as a “blood moon,” will be visible across much of the Americas, Europe, and the UK on the night of March 13. This phenomenon occurs when Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the moon, causing its surface to turn red. The last total lunar eclipse took place on November 8, 2022, and the upcoming one is expected to occur on March 13-14. The eclipse is predicted to last 6 hours and 3 minutes, with the totality phase happening around 2:30 a.m. EST on March 14 for those in the U.S. The best views of the total lunar eclipse will be in North America, South America, western parts of Europe, and Africa. The next total lunar eclipse visible in the U.S. won’t occur until March 2026, with the next Election Day lunar eclipse set for November 8, 2394. If you are interested in witnessing this celestial event, make sure to check the local weather conditions and mark your calendar for the night of March 13.
