Following the overthrow of the Assad regime in Syria, the country’s new rulers are facing a challenge as armed groups loyal to the former government continue to pose a threat. While the new government has pledged to bring all armed groups under state control, the security situation remains unstable.
The attacks on Syria’s western coast are largely attributed to small-scale cells of Assad loyalists, according to the Institute for the Study of War. However, recent attacks against security forces demonstrated clear coordination and prior planning, indicating a potential shift towards more organized resistance.
A group calling itself the “Military Council for the Liberation of Syria” issued a statement vowing to overthrow the new leadership, led by a former general from the Assad regime’s Fourth Division. Other pro-Assad armed groups have also emerged and claimed responsibility for attacks against security forces.
In response, the new government has deployed security forces to the coastal region to restore order. Col. Hassan Abdul Ghani, a spokesman for the Syrian Ministry of Defense, stated that militants have been given the choice to lay down their weapons or face their inevitable fate, with some already surrendering while others continue to fight.
The situation in Syria remains tense as the government and its allies work to quell the insurgency from pro-Assad loyalists. The rise of organized armed groups poses a significant challenge to the stability of the region, and the government’s response will be crucial in determining the country’s future.
