The University of Massachusetts Amherst Police Department is mourning the loss of Miranda, their beloved police horse, who passed away just before her 30th birthday. Miranda had been a vital part of the department since 2011, serving as an ambassador at numerous events on and off the UMass campus. Known for her strong, opinionated, and sassy personality, Miranda was affectionately nicknamed “Betty White.” She was described as comfortable in various patrol settings, whether pushing forward during crowd operations or interacting with children who came to meet the police horses.
Miranda also played a role in equine academic classes, where she taught students that her way was the only way. Despite her demanding nature, Miranda was always motivated by snacks, which she made sure everyone knew were a necessary part of her good behavior. The UMPD expressed their deep sorrow over losing Miranda, stating that she was a one-of-a-kind horse who will be greatly missed by her riders and the community.
MassLive attempted to contact the UMPD for information on Miranda’s cause of death, but did not receive a response. The loss of Miranda has left a void in the UMPD, as they remember her fondly for her spirited personality and dedication to her role as a police horse.
