The Netflix show “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” rekindled interest in the infamous case of the Menendez brothers, who were convicted of murdering their parents in 1989. The show inspired a teenager in Wisconsin to allegedly stab his mother to death, mirroring the events depicted in the documentary. The teenager admitted to killing his mother and cited an episode from the Netflix series as his inspiration.
The teenager confessed to feeling depressed and high after taking his brother’s anxiety medication for a month. On the night of the murder, he watched a scene from the documentary that motivated him to kill his mother. After hiding his mother’s sleeping medication, he struck her in the head with a dumbbell before stabbing her multiple times, leading to her death.
The teenager reached out to a friend on Snapchat to call the police after the murder and confessed to the authorities upon their arrival. He appeared in court and was given a $1 million bail, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for March.
Meanwhile, the Menendez brothers themselves have filed a petition to challenge their murder convictions, seeking a retrial based on new evidence. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman opposed the petition, stating that the new evidence did not meet the standards required to vacate the convictions or conduct a retrial. Despite this, calls for the brothers’ release have increased following the renewed interest in their case sparked by the Netflix series.
