Northeastern University has announced plans to replace Matthews Arena with a new multipurpose athletics and recreation complex that will serve as the home for the men’s and women’s basketball and hockey programs. The complex will include an arena with a capacity of 4,050 for hockey and 5,300 for basketball, as well as practice facilities for other teams. The project is pending final approval from the city and state, with construction likely to begin in 2026 and be completed by the 2028-29 season.
During construction, basketball programs will use the Cabot Recreation Complex, while hockey teams will seek alternative practice facilities in the greater Boston area. Despite the inconvenience of playing away from campus for two-plus seasons, the university believes the long-term benefits of the new arena will enhance recruiting and fan experience.
Matthews Arena, originally known as Boston Arena, has a rich history dating back to 1910, hosting various sporting events and political rallies. The university acquired the building in 1979 and renamed it Matthews Arena in honor of George J. Matthews. The new facility will provide modern amenities for fans and student-athletes, improving the overall experience of attending games and practices.
