Wilo Morales-Colon, a New Bedford man, was held without bail at his arraignment for the fatal shooting of a woman he had a personal relationship with. The 49-year-old was arrested in Springfield after an arrest warrant was obtained. He is charged with murder and unlawful carrying of a firearm. The shooting took place on March 4 at an apartment building where the victim, Karina Martinez-Ortiz, was found covered in blood and later died at the hospital. Morales-Colon was a neighbor of Martinez-Ortiz. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to raise money for Martinez-Ortiz’s memorial costs, with a goal of $10,000. As of Thursday afternoon, the campaign has raised over $2,500. Morales-Colon is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause hearing on March 28. His defense attorney declined to comment on the case. With the suspect in custody, the community mourns the loss of Martinez-Ortiz and comes together to support her family in this difficult time.
