Police Chief in Massachusetts Steps Down After Dispute Over Trump Flag

Dennis Minnich, the police chief of West Boylston, Massachusetts, has announced that he will not be returning to his job following a dispute with the town administrator, James Ryan. The conflict arose when Ryan demanded Minnich remove a Trump flag from a gym used by officers, citing it as a civil rights violation.

Minnich, who has been the chief since 1997, disagreed with Ryan’s characterization of the flag and returned it to the officer who owned it. However, a second flag supporting Trump’s potential 2024 campaign appeared in the gym, leading to further tension between Minnich and Ryan.

The town administrator allegedly sent an employee to confirm if the first flag had been taken down, which Minnich viewed as a security violation and a breach of trust. His decision not to return to work was influenced by these actions, and he plans to use vacation days until his contract ends on March 2.

The Select Board will address Minnich’s concerns at their next meeting. Ryan did not respond to requests for comment regarding the situation.
