Former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati has co-founded a new artificial intelligence start-up called Thinking Machines Lab, joining a growing number of young companies in the A.I. industry. The goal of Thinking Machines Lab is to make A.I. systems more widely understood, customizable, and capable, and the company plans to share its technologies with outside researchers and companies through open source practices.
While Thinking Machines Lab has not disclosed any fundraising efforts, Ms. Murati’s departure from OpenAI in September followed the unexpected removal and reinstatement of the company’s chief executive, Sam Altman, in November 2023. Following her departure, Ms. Murati and other former OpenAI executives, including co-founder Ilya Sutskever, have created their own A.I. companies amidst a global race involving tech giants like Google, Meta, and Microsoft to develop powerful A.I. technologies.
Ms. Murati’s decision to leave OpenAI was influenced by disagreements over the company’s direction and A.I. philosophy, ultimately leading to her rejection of the CEO role offered to her after Mr. Altman’s removal. The Times reported allegations that Ms. Murati had raised concerns about Mr. Altman’s management prior to his ouster, which were denied by her lawyer. Despite the controversies, Ms. Murati stated that she left OpenAI to pursue her own exploration, signaling a new chapter in her career with the launch of Thinking Machines Lab.
