Former president Donald Trump has agreed to a settlement with social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, over the suspension of his account following the Capitol riot in 2021. The settlement, totaling around $10 million, comes after Mr. Trump sued X and other tech firms for wrongfully censoring him.
Elon Musk, the owner of X and a close adviser to Trump, reinstated the former president’s account shortly after acquiring the company in 2022. The settlement further solidifies the relationship between Musk and Trump, with details of the agreement not publicly disclosed.
Mr. Trump also sued Facebook and Google after they suspended his accounts as well. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, settled with Trump last month, agreeing to pay $25 million.
In a separate settlement with ABC News, Mr. Trump received $15 million to settle a defamation lawsuit. Both Meta and ABC News agreed to contribute to Mr. Trump’s future presidential foundation and museum.
The settlement with X demonstrates the ongoing legal battles between tech platforms and prominent figures, highlighting concerns over censorship and free speech on social media. The agreements reached in these cases also point to the financial repercussions faced by companies when dealing with high-profile individuals like Mr. Trump.
