Blue Origin, the space company owned by Jeff Bezos, announced on Thursday that it would be laying off about 10% of its workforce. The company, which has more than 10,000 employees, stated that the layoffs were necessary to streamline operations and focus on manufacturing and launch efficiency.
The specific number of positions affected in Florida, where the company has a significant presence, was not disclosed. Blue Origin also has operations in Alabama, Texas, and Washington.
In a letter to employees, CEO Dave Limp attributed the layoffs to excessive management and bureaucracy that had built up over the years. He emphasized the company’s commitment to scaling manufacturing output and launch cadence for its New Glenn and New Shepard rockets, as well as its Blue Moon lunar lander.
Despite the layoffs, Limp expressed confidence in the company’s future prospects and growth opportunities. Blue Origin is looking to become a major player in the space industry, with plans to land on the moon and compete for lucrative national security missions. The company also intends to continue hiring for key positions to support its programs and goals.
