Two Russian men have been sentenced by a Polish court under espionage laws for distributing propaganda for the disabnded Wagner mercenary group. The pair, identified as Alexei T. and Andrei G., were detained in August 2023 for distributing stickers in Polish cities with the Wagner logo, a slogan in English saying “We are here. Join us”, and a QR code leading to a Russian website about the group. The court found them guilty of participating in “hybrid warfare” against Poland and sentenced them to five years and six months in jail.
Poland, with strained relations with Russia, has accused Moscow of orchestrating sabotage attempts on its soil aimed at destabilizing the country. The country has been a staunch ally of Ukraine and has helped transfer military equipment to the conflict-torn nation. Previously, Poland convicted 14 citizens of Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine for preparing sabotage on behalf of Moscow.
The recent ruling is part of Poland’s efforts to crack down on Russian influence and espionage activities within its borders. This comes in the midst of heightened tensions between the two countries following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The closure of the Russian consulate in Poznan in October was also attributed to Moscow’s alleged “hybrid war” against Poland. Poland continues to be vigilant against potential threats and sabotage attempts orchestrated by its eastern neighbor.
