Gasoline spill at King Street Convenience leads to fines for delivery company and station owner
A gasoline spill at King Street Convenience in Northampton has resulted in fines for Fabian Oil, the delivery company, and ZQHW Corp., the station owner. The spill of about 30 gallons occurred on June 26, 2023, but was not reported to state officials until two days later, in violation of state law requiring notification within two hours for spills exceeding 10 gallons.
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection fined Fabian Oil $15,625 and ZQHW Corp. $12,500 for the late notification. While the cause of the spill is not known, it is believed to be related to pressure buildup or blockage of the vapor recovery system for the underground storage tank.
Initial cleanup efforts were conducted by employees of both companies and the Northampton Fire Department. Fabian retrained its personnel on proper spill response procedures, while ZQHW Corp. must also train its employees on how to respond to spills of oil and hazardous materials.
Both companies have paid a portion of the fines, with the remaining amounts suspended pending compliance with the orders from MassDEP.
