Former Patriots player and Hall of Famer joins NFC rival as coaching assistant

In a restructuring move by Mike Vrabel, Troy Brown has officially left the Patriots coaching staff after five seasons. The Patriots Hall of Famer and three-time Super Bowl champion did not make it to Vrabel’s redesigned coaching team for the 2025 season. Brown will now be joining the New York Giants as an offensive assistant under Brian Daboll through the NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship. Daboll previously worked with Brown during his time as the Patriots’ wide receivers coach from 2002-06.

Brown, who spent his entire playing career with the Patriots from 1993-2007, returned to the organization in 2020 as a coach. He held various coaching positions within the team, including serving as the wide receivers coach and kick returners coach. With Jerod Mayo’s departure in January, Vrabel made significant changes to the coaching staff, leading to Brown moving on.

Todd Downing will take over Brown’s role as the wide receivers coach in 2025, while Brown’s responsibilities as a kick and punt returners coach will be handled by the special teams staff led by coordinator Jeremy Springer and assistant Tom Quinn. Brown’s departure adds to the list of ex-Patriots stars like Matthew Slater and Dont’a Hightower who will not be coaching for the Patriots this season.

This move signifies a new chapter in Brown’s coaching career as he transitions to the Giants organization. The Patriots will continue to undergo changes under Vrabel’s leadership as they prepare for the upcoming season.
