Could Trump put an end to daylight saving time changes?

In less than a month, Americans will lose an hour of sleep as daylight saving time begins, delaying the moment day becomes night. Despite the tradition dating back to 1918, many Americans are frustrated with the biannual time changes. Lawmakers have attempted to make daylight saving time permanent, with the U.S. Senate approving the Sunshine Protection Act in 2022, although it was not passed by the U.S. House of Representatives or signed by former President Joe Biden. Former President Donald Trump has expressed a desire to end daylight saving time and make standard time year-round.

Daylight saving time is set to begin on Sunday, March 9, 2025, affecting most Americans who adjust their clocks ahead by one hour between March and November. The practice was originally implemented as a wartime measure, but faced opposition from farmers in 1919. Nationwide daylight saving time was repealed that year, leading to a patchwork of time zones until the Uniform Time Act passed in 1966.

Despite Trump’s intentions, as of February 12, no executive legislation has been passed to permanently end daylight saving time. The U.S. Department of Transportation is in charge of overseeing daylight saving time and U.S. time zones, citing energy reduction and reduced crime as reasons for the practice. States like Arizona and Hawaii, as well as territories like Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, do not recognize daylight saving time.
