Federal Worker Buyout Plan Approved by Judge Despite Trump Administration’s Closure Announcement

A federal judge in Massachusetts allowed the Trump administration’s program offering “deferred resignations” to federal workers to continue, lifting a previous court order pausing the program’s deadline. The judge ruled that the plaintiffs, unions representing federal employees, lacked standing to bring the case and did not have jurisdiction to stop the program. The Office of Personnel Management closed the program after the ruling.

The program allowed federal employees to resign while retaining pay and benefits until September. Unions sued to stop the program, arguing it violated federal law, but the judge found their damages were not sufficient and that they must first pursue administrative review.

President Trump’s broader initiative to reduce the federal workforce includes returning employees to offices five days a week and creating a new category for career civil servants. Elon Musk has been tapped to oversee the Department of Government Efficiency, leading to legal challenges from unions.

The OPM spokesperson stated that the program was legal and provided valuable benefits to federal workers, while the unions vowed to continue legal action to protect civil service and Americans from extremism. CBS News reporter Robert Legare contributed to the report.
