Steven Fike, an Alabama inmate, is expected to plead guilty to manslaughter for the 1980 killing of Wendy Dansereau in Boston. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Fike, aged 67, will change his plea from not guilty to guilty at a hearing on March 12 in Suffolk Superior Court. Dansereau, 19, was found strangled and sexually assaulted at the Hotel Diplomat in the South End on March 18, 1980. Fike’s DNA matched the genetic profile found at the crime scene, which led to his identification and arrest in 2019. Previously convicted of a 1982 rape and murder in Alabama, Fike is currently serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole. The case highlights the importance of DNA evidence and modern technology in solving cold cases, bringing closure to families and justice to victims even after decades have passed.
