A federal judge has ruled to keep the Trump administration’s deferred resignation program known as “Fork in the Road” on hold until its legality is determined. This decision comes just hours before the deadline for approximately two million federal workers to accept incentives to quit. The program, which was part of an Elon Musk-led initiative to reduce the size of the federal government, offers workers pay through September if they choose to resign.
U.S. District Court Judge George A. O’Toole Jr. in the District of Massachusetts halted the Office of Personnel Management from moving forward with the program until a ruling is made. While it is unclear when Judge O’Toole will make a decision, the agency has stated that the program has not been canceled and will honor the deferred resignation offer.
Despite the pause, over 65,000 federal workers have already accepted the offer, representing less than 3% of the total federal workforce. The Trump administration aims to reduce the federal government workforce by luring 5 to 10% of employees to resign. Federal agencies are still processing resignations, and lists of employees who have chosen to quit have been submitted.
As the situation unfolds, the federal government and the Office of Personnel Management are managing the process while waiting for further legal clarification on the program’s future. Stay tuned for updates as the situation progresses.
