Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has signed an order to restore the name of Fort Liberty back to its original name of Fort Bragg. The North Carolina base had been renamed in 2023 as part of an effort to remove names honoring Confederate leaders. The base was originally named after Gen. Braxton Bragg, a Confederate general known for owning slaves and losing key battles in the Civil War.
The renaming honors Pfc. Roland L. Bragg, a World War II hero who received the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his bravery during the Battle of the Bulge. This decision allows the base to recognize individuals who have shown exceptional service and sacrifice for the nation.
The choice to name the base after a World War II hero circumvents a law that prohibits naming military bases after Confederate leaders. The name change reflects the base’s legacy of honoring those who have served the country. Secretary Hegseth announced the change in a video, emphasizing that “Bragg is back!” despite the fact that the base had still been commonly referred to as Fort Bragg.
