Following President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico, Google officially updated the region’s name to the Gulf of America on Maps. The tech company cited its longstanding practice of renaming locations based on official government sources. However, while users in the United States now see the region labeled as the Gulf of America, users in Mexico continue to see it as the Gulf of Mexico on Google Maps. The names displayed on the app are based on the user’s country location.
The move drew criticism from Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, who sarcastically suggested renaming North America to “América Mexicana” in response. She also sent a letter to Google asking them not to make the name change to the gulf. President Trump’s decision to revert Denali back to Mount McKinley after President William McKinley was met with mixed reactions, as Obama’s Department of the Interior had previously renamed it to Denali. Overall, the renaming of geographical locations based on political decisions continues to spark debates and controversies.
