Hingham MA Artificial Intelligence lawsuit scheduled for federal court hearing – NBC Boston

A high school student from Hingham, Massachusetts has found themselves at the center of a controversy surrounding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in learning. The student and a classmate used AI for research notes while working on a history paper, resulting in a detention, removal from the National Honor Society, and a significant drop in grades. The student, now a senior applying to colleges, is concerned about the impact on their applications.

During a hearing, the student argued that the school handbook had no explicit rules regarding AI usage, while the district Superintendent explained that guidelines for AI use in English classes were expected to apply in other classes as well. The family’s attorney believes the punishment is too harsh for using commonly used technology.

The family’s lawyer emphasized the need to embrace AI in education and develop appropriate curriculum and integration of technology in schools. The Hingham Public Schools have since released updated guidance on AI use.

The family is arguing that the punishment has been extreme and is now interfering with the student’s college applications. Despite being readmitted to the National Honor Society, the family is seeking transparency and resolution from the school district. The judge is set to decide whether to reverse the disciplinary actions taken against the student.
