James Feeley pleads for a change in plea – NBC Boston

A former Winthrop Police lieutenant, James Feeley, is set for a plea change hearing at Suffolk Superior Court on Monday. Feeley was charged with seven counts of indecent assault and battery on a child and rape of a child after allegations of sexual abuse that took place between August 2022 and December 2023. The victim disclosed the abuse on Christmas Day and was later taken to Boston Children’s Hospital. Feeley admitted to the abuse in a recorded interview and faces a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Feeley, who served in the Winthrop Police Department for 21 years, was initially placed on administrative leave after his arrest but is no longer with the department. A dramatic confession was made by Feeley at Belle Isle Cemetery to Winthrop Police Chief Terence Delehanty on the night of Christmas, where he apologized for the abuse and expressed suicidal ideation. The case has been described as troubling by Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden, who has pledged support for the victim and her family.

Feeley’s lawyer has agreed to the conditions required for his bail, including wearing a GPS tracker and staying away from the victim. The case is set to go to trial in March, and the seriousness of the allegations has prompted calls for maintaining the terms of Feeley’s bail. Support resources for sexual assault survivors are available through the National Sexual Violence Resources Center and the National Sexual Assault Telephone Hotline.
