Former Red Sox Slugger J.D. Martinez Signs Deal with JOOLA to Transition to Professional Pickleball

Former Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez has made a surprising career move by signing an exclusive deal with table tennis and pickleball equipment manufacturer JOOLA. Martinez, who played for the Red Sox from 2018 to 2022, is preparing to transition to professional pickleball after his baseball career.

Martinez expressed his commitment to the sport, stating that he sees pickleball as a long-term endeavor and is excited about the partnership with JOOLA. He has already started training with pro player Eric White, who believes that Martinez has the potential to excel in the sport, noting that he has “no ceiling” when it comes to pickleball.

At 37 years old and currently a free agent, Martinez last played professional baseball for the Mets in 2024. During his time in Boston, Martinez had some of the best years of his career, earning four All-Star appearances and being a key player in the team’s 2018 World Series win against the Dodgers.

Pickleball, a sport that combines elements of tennis and table tennis, has been gaining popularity in recent years and has been dubbed the “fastest growing sport in the U.S.” by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. With celebrities like Martinez investing in the sport and the establishment of professional leagues, pickleball is on the rise. Martinez is set to compete in professional events like the PPA Challenger Series and host his own pickleball tournaments with the backing of JOOLA.
