Volunteer hiker missing in Great Smoky Mountains found deceased

A 73-year-old volunteer hiker named Ann Houghton was found dead in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park after being reported missing. She had planned to hike in the park from Jan. 28-29, and search efforts focused on several trails in the Smokemont area where her vehicle was found. Houghton had volunteered in the park for over 20 years and was nominated for a National Park Service award for volunteer service. Her cause of death is still under investigation, but no foul play is suspected.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has seen 137 deaths between 2007 and March 2024, with the majority being unintentional. Deaths in national parks are not always reflective of park safety, as they can be due to various reasons including suicide, vehicle crashes, drownings, and falls. The most recent deaths at the park were due to drowning and a vehicle crash.

The park service emphasizes the importance of safety measures and precautions for visitors to avoid accidents and incidents. While the number of deaths is significant, it does not necessarily indicate an unsafe environment for visitors. The park offers condolences to the family and friends of Ann Houghton and continues to prioritize visitor safety in the park.
