UN reports increasing number of executions of Ukrainian POWs by Russia during ongoing conflict in Ukraine

A recent report by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has revealed a sharp rise in the number of executions of Ukrainian soldiers by Russian armed forces. The report documented 79 executions in 24 separate incidents since August 2024, with many Ukrainian soldiers being shot dead on the spot after surrendering or being captured.

The UN mission obtained evidence from footage, photographs, and witness interviews, as well as geolocating incidents to areas where Russian forces were operating. The report also highlighted an incident where a wounded Russian soldier was executed by Ukrainian troops.

The report has raised concerns about potential war crimes being committed during the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with accusations of unlawful behavior and inhumane treatment coming from both sides. The head of the UN mission, Danielle Bell, emphasized that calls for the execution of captured soldiers violate international humanitarian law and must be thoroughly investigated.

The report comes after Ukraine opened a criminal case against Russia for the execution of six Ukrainian soldiers in Donetsk, which was deemed a serious violation of the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War. The UN has called for all allegations of executions to be investigated and for those responsible to be held accountable for their actions.

The international community is watching closely as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, with calls for justice and accountability for all violations of international humanitarian law.
