Los Angeles fires under control, reopening of Palisades burn area postponed

The Eaton and Palisades fires in Los Angeles have been fully contained after burning over 37,000 acres and destroying homes and livelihoods. The fires, which started on Jan. 7 during a historic wind event, are the second and third most destructive wildfires in California history. Checkpoints in the area will remain in place for safety, with responsibilities transferring to the California Highway Patrol and National Guard. Clean-up efforts are complicated by toxic debris from the fires, and residents are advised not to sift through it due to its highly toxic nature. Rebuilding efforts may take time and require the expertise of licensed contractors to handle the waste. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass prioritizes rebuilding the Palisades rapidly and safely. Despite the containment of the fires, challenges remain for the affected communities as they begin the long process of recovery and restoration.
