OpenAI recently unveiled a groundbreaking A.I. technology called Deep Research, which can gather information from across the internet and synthesize it into concise reports in a matter of minutes. Kevin Weil, Chief Product Officer at OpenAI, stated that Deep Research can accomplish complex research tasks that would typically take a person days in just five to 30 minutes. This technology, classified as an A.I. agent, is capable of utilizing various software and services on the internet to carry out tasks like ordering food or synthesizing information.
During a demonstration in Washington, Mr. Weil showcased Deep Research collecting information about Albert Einstein and creating a detailed report about the physicist. Although the generated reports include citations showing where the information was sourced, there is still the risk of inaccuracies, a phenomenon known as “hallucination” in the field of A.I. research.
Despite potential limitations, Mr. Weil believes that Deep Research could help the U.S. accelerate economic growth, particularly benefiting fields such as finance, science, and law. The tool will be available to subscribers of ChatGPT Pro, a $200-a-month service that provides access to OpenAI’s latest tools. This new technology is built on a neural network system that allows it to learn skills by analyzing data. OpenAI’s Deep Research is based on their latest reasoning technology, OpenAI o3, and is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to advance A.I. capabilities.
