ESPN’s mock draft shocks with Patriots selecting ‘defensive cornerstone’ in unexpected choice

In the latest mock draft by ESPN’s Matt Miller, the New England Patriots have a surprising pick at No. 4 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. Instead of addressing their biggest needs at wide receiver, offensive lineman, or pass rusher, Miller has the Patriots selecting Michigan defensive lineman Mason Graham. Despite not directly addressing their needs, Miller suggests that the Patriots could target offensive line and receiver in free agency. Graham is described as a fiery and active interior pass rusher with the potential to be a difference-maker in the 3-technique. Standing at 6-foot-3 and 320 pounds, Graham is considered the best interior defensive lineman in the draft class. Miller compared him to Ravens star Nnamdi Madubuike and noted that Graham consistently beats the player in front of him. The Patriots’ new head coach Mike Vrabel is speculated to be looking for a defensive cornerstone like Jeffery Simmons in Tennessee. This pick could be a strategic move to establish a strong defensive foundation with Graham, third-year defensive end Keion White, and the sidelined Christian Barmore.
