Judge Rules in Favor of Boston Magazine, Upholding the Importance of the Free Flow of Information

A recent ruling in the Norfolk Superior Court has determined that Boston Magazine journalist Gretchen Voss will not have to turn over her handwritten notes of an off-the-record interview with defendant Karen Read in the murder case of John O’Keefe. Judge Beverly Cannone reversed her previous order, citing a danger to the public interest in the free flow of information. Voss had argued that disclosing the notes would harm her credibility as a journalist and erode the ability to assure her sources of confidentiality. Prosecutor Hank Brennan had initially requested access to all of Voss’ notes and recordings but Voss filed a motion to reconsider. The case involves allegations that Read struck O’Keefe with her vehicle following a drunken argument and left him to die. Read’s defense team claims she is being framed by outside actors. The next trial is set to begin on April 1. The ruling underscores the importance of protecting journalistic confidentiality and the ability to maintain trust with sources in high-profile cases.
