This Black History Month is marked by a stark contrast between celebrating the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and witnessing President Donald Trump’s attacks on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. President Biden had embraced DEI, but with executive orders, Trump dismantled decades of progress in the federal government. Following George Floyd’s murder, corporate America pledged billions to address systemic racism, but faced opposition from conservative groups, politicians, and media figures who deem DEI divisive and harmful. Conservative organizations, politicians, legal groups, and media outlets have actively challenged DEI, painting it as a Marxist agenda that threatens American values.
Corporations like Walmart, McDonald’s, Twitter, Disney, and Google have scaled back DEI efforts under pressure. The battle over DEI reflects deeper tensions around race, power, and culture in the US. The survival of DEI initiatives will depend on how companies, policymakers, and communities navigate these divisions.
