Understanding Aircraft Collision Avoidance Systems

Decades ago, after a series of accidents, including a tragic 1986 crash near Cerritos, California, Congress mandated the use of Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) on all large commercial airplanes. TCAS has been credited with preventing countless collisions by providing urgent instructions to pilots to avoid other aircraft. However, it is optional on military aircraft, raising questions about its presence on the Army helicopter involved in a recent crash.

While TCAS is essential for mid-air collision avoidance, it has limitations at lower altitudes where aircraft are closer together. In these situations, the system may issue limited alerts to prevent confusion. To supplement TCAS, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has required the use of the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system on passenger airlines and many other aircraft. ADS-B broadcasts detailed information about the aircraft’s location, altitude, and speed every second, providing air traffic controllers and pilots with valuable data.

ADS-B is especially useful in poor weather conditions or low visibility, allowing pilots to visualize nearby aircraft and enhance situational awareness. While it does not provide the same level of collision avoidance alerts as TCAS, it serves as a valuable tool in modern aviation safety. Dr. Hassan Shahidi, President of the Flight Safety Foundation, has emphasized the importance of ADS-B in improving safety during flights.

As the investigation into the recent crash continues, questions remain about the use of TCAS and ADS-B on the Army helicopter involved. These technologies play a crucial role in preventing mid-air collisions and enhancing aviation safety for passengers and crew alike.
